It’s been a while since I’ve written anything on The Tall Traveller... largely due to me being on-the-go past few weeks. Here is quick break down of [probably] the most travelled month of my life.
My hectic August began with Johnny and I taking an extended weekend to explore a bit of mainland Europe and meeting old high school friends I hadn’t seen since Thailand days. Three friends, from three different countries, who met in Thailand but were now reminiscing old days! Fantastic. In between countless hours of planes, trains and walking… we covered Brussels, Antwerp and Amsterdam. A little deprived of sleep, Johnny and I said our goodbyes and hopped back to Ireland for one last week of internship.
My plans were to catch up on sleep, healthy eating and exercising from the beat-down weekend, but that didn’t happen too well. With more goodbyes to say and limited time with co-workers in Ireland, the last few days were once again, hectic. Saturday 15th Johnny and I were due back in the US [ended up going on different flights, him leaving at 3am and me leaving at 6am, from different airports]. However, since my adventurous self can’t get enough of travel, a month prior to all this I had confirmed an impromptu trip down to South Carolina, to see Chelsea [Chelsea’s Treasures] and Kayla... the two girls I met on a cruise in the Caribbean over last Spring Break [See the cruise story I wrote of the best week of my life, here]
Johnny touched down at 1:45pm while I landed at 2:10pm, both at JFK. While he proceeded to take trains, buses, cars, and whatever else to get back to upstate NY, I stayed at JFK in transit, waiting for Flight 1820. At this point, my lack of sleep from the previous weekend had developed into chronic upset stomach, weakness and fatigue… but somehow the excitement of my destination kept my spirits up high.
Touched down Charlotte, NC Saturday 15th, 9pm. Absolute bliss. [check out Chelsea’s video compilation here] We drove to Columbia, where we spent the night and explored in the morning. By the afternoon of the 2nd day we were on our way to Myrtle Beach, a quick 3-hour drive to the coast. I had finally gotten a chance to get a breather, but the constant moving around and inconsistent eating pattern past 8 days had me sick. The day before my departure back to New Jersey, we drove to Rock Hill where Chelsea’s parents not only showed me around town but also cooked a fantastic dinner.
Wednesday the 19th I was bound back to South Orange. After a flight, three trains and a 2 mile walk with a suitcase, I arrived back at my college house and all I wanted to do was crash. Except I had changed rooms over summer, so my new room was empty and dirty. I spent the rest of the day putting a room together with furniture left for me downstairs. Phew, room was partially complete. Now the only issue was the lack of a washing machine, a drying machine and a refrigerator. I had to work my way around that.
Hectic! A week of relaxation and then BAM! Some more travel. My parents fly in from Surabaya, Indonesia.. while my sister, her soon-to-be-husband and his mom fly in from Brazil, destination.. New York! My mom’s first time in the US since I started school here in 2012. They’re currently staying in Brooklyn, so I’ve been busy running back and forth from New Jersey to Brooklyn, trying to balance attending classes and showing them around New York.
So all in all.. I finished August both physically and emotionally drained. I was in 12 cities in 4 countries this past month. A total of fifteen trains (16+ hours), five flights (13 hours), two buses and numerous hours in car rides. In a month I saw some of my best high school friends, Chelsea who I’ve become very close to and hadn’t seen for half a year and my family who I love.
What a crazy, crazy month. All in all, within 15 days I lost 10 pounds… the travel took a toll on my body. But I’m happy to be back in school and back to a schedule. Time to strap down and be productive again!
Stay put for my next blog post about doing all of the above… without a phone! Unfortunately an accident by a co-worker left my phone crushed in the trunk of a car. But that’s for another post ;) Also stay put for a post of my best pictures of Ireland, Belgium and Holland this summer!
Here is a picture from each location before I post all of them!
